Editorial commentary:
When I look back on the year 2024, I saw many bands and concerts, many previously unknown bands and some that I had never seen before and am finally catching up on. On one such occasion, I came across A Swarm to the Sun. In 2024, the post-rock/metal duo accompanied The Ocean on tour with their live band and initially caused me some confusion, because the design of the media for The Ocean made the name of the support seem like a motto or a tour name. Only after taking a closer look did I realize that this was the name of the act. After some research, I did get some information and wasn’t quite sure what my impression of A Swarm of the Sun was.
At the concert in Aschaffenburg I was able to get a live impression of them. Often I have bands that I absolutely adore live but can’t really listen to on CD, with others it’s the other way around, and I hoped that the band that confused me so much could convince me live and so much in advance, they could. Because even before they started, I noticed something special, the band didn’t have the typical run-of-the-mill stage set-up, where the keyboard player is crammed into a corner with the drummer, but the instrument and more, stood on the side of the stage. And I say „more“ deliberately, because I can’t say exactly what was there. Even if you might think from reading that there wasn’t much movement on stage due to the set-up, you’d be wrong! Singer Jakob Berglund switches between his instruments, and with each change it brings dynamism to the music. And even if the music should actually seem quite synth-heavy, the rest of the band wraps it in a pleasant rock/metal cloak that puts the icing on the cake. With punctual lighting and the sound, which sounded even fuller live than what I listened to online, the band not only convinced me, but also persuaded me to buy their music.
After this live experience, I can recommend A Swarm of the Sun to anyone who is deeply immersed in music and not afraid of 10 minute+ songs. Live and also on record/streaming.
