Editorial commentary:

I would like to dedicate today’s band of the week to Toter Fisch: A French band with a German name, where at first you might not know exactly what kind of music they make. But I can tell you one thing: even if the name sounds funny, these guys are really serious! Musically, this likeable band is really good and there was nothing dead on stage! It was really going wild. Toter Fisch are definitely not your standard pirate band!

The buccaneers swept across the stage of the Mahlstrom Open Air with accordion and stage decorations befitting their status, such as skulls, and really knocked my socks off with their stage presence and sound. This was one of the bands I had been looking forward to the most, having only known them on record so far. No wonder, as they were setting sail for Germany for the first time!

Their music is truly a mix of death and folk metal, interspersed with occasional black metal elements… and the accordion is almost always very present, which I really like. But there are also occasional symphonic parts in the songs, which come into their own in Awaking, for example, but it really always harmonises and makes the sound of Toter Fisch unmistakable! I simply celebrate it! Just like people’s reactions when they realised that Toter Fisch are from France!

Their latest album ASPIDOCHELONE in particular has become damn strong and it comes across even better live. The guys were really up for it and you could tell. Later on, they were available for a chat at the merch desk and if you were lucky, you could get a self-painted sea creature on your autograph card. Scribbled and signed by the captain himself, of course! Thanks again!

The French buccaneers definitely won me over and I’m really looking forward to seeing Toter Fisch at the Morgarten Fest again soon! If you have the chance, make sure you take it. They deserve it!
