Band of the week: Baldrs Draumar

Band of the week 32/2024

Origin: Frisian (Netherlands)
Genre: Folk Metal, Viking Metal

Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.

The band about itself:

Baldrs Draumar is a Frisian band which has been raiding the stages since 2009 promoting their epic and thundering Folkmetal. After releasing their first full-length album Forfedres Fortellinger in 2011 the band decided to focus on their own Frisian roots and language changing their line-up, performance and musical style slightly to become one of the most brutal Folkmetal bands around.

Editorial commentary:

Today I would like to introduce you to a very special band: Baldrs Draumar from Friesland, the northernmost part of the Netherlands.

I became aware of the guys because dear Michael from Vanaheim was wearing one of their shirts and he was doing some advertising for their current album Njord, which was being released at the time. The design and the description immediately caught my attention and I gave it a listen.

What I hadn’t expected was that Njord was an acoustic album. That was the first surprise. The second followed at the same time, because they sang neither in English nor in Dutch, but in their native Frisian, which is very similar to the Nordic language, is unfortunately hardly spoken anymore and simply fits perfectly. I generally really like it when bands sing in their native language, and this was no exception!

So once I was hooked, I rummaged through the discography and have to say that the metal songs are also quite impressive. They mainly sing about Nordic mythology, their namesake Baldr and their homeland with its connection to the Faroe Islands. They will also be releasing a documentary about the latter in the summer. But they also set everyday stories to music and you’ll have to find out for yourself what sheep have to do with it! Mäh!

I had Baldrs Draumar on my radar, but unfortunately I hadn’t had the chance to see them live since their release until the wonderful organisers of the Mittsommernächte Bärenstein told me that they had booked the guys. But not only that… They were supposed to play two gigs, one acoustic set and one metal set. And what can I say, it was fantastic. The unplugged show in particular was just unbelievably great. The emotions and feelings that Baldrs Draumar showed while playing… I really like that!

But the second set also had it all, because these likeable guys can do metal too! And how… The hair was flying and the crowd was really into it.

Unfortunately, the next chance to see Baldrs Draumar live will probably be next year at the Dark Troll Festival, but I’m already looking forward to it!

Make sure you check out their music and if you have the chance to see them live, make sure you do! It will be worth it!
