Editorial commentary:
Should we really present a band that doesn’t have a single release yet, that you can’t listen to on streaming services (yet) and not on CD or vinyl as a follow-up to this Band of the Week feature? A band that only has a few live recordings? Yes, we should. In the Band of the Week section, we present smaller, lesser-known or completely unknown bands that trigger something in us that makes them worth presenting. So today it’s the band Mighty Ignition, and you as a reader are among the first to read about this band here. Let us take you with us and get you excited about this band and this genre.
A genre that is not often mentioned in our magazine, namely blues and blues rock. Is that old school? Is it no longer listened to? And then an up-and-coming band plays at a small open-air festival in Flörsheim am Main and sweeps the stage, captivates the audience and gets their full attention in between all the stoner and ska acts. And lo and behold, it’s not just the ‘slightly older’ ones who can relate. Jeff Beck and Joe Bonamassa are bands that have left their mark right up to the present day and are also quoted by Mighty Ignition to some extent – not only, of course, because they now have a portfolio of two and a half hours with strong influences from jazz, soul, funk and rock; playful, dreamy, completely immersed in ‘their’ music. The performance is simple, with no frills, no posing, no headbanging and everything else you’re used to. Every concert and every song is different, with a lot of improvisation, and the love for their instruments and what they can do with them is extraordinary.
A couple of guys and a fairly recently a young woman came together, as it happens, by chance, through their studies, through their love of blues rock, someone knows someone and so on. As it is sometimes. This year was very successful, because after the Flörsheim Open Air, the next one followed just one week later at the Treburer Open Air not bad for a band that only played their first gig on 25 March 2023. Back then, Mighty Ignition consisted of Florian Späth (guitar/vocals), Maximilian Scharpenberg (drums), Leonhard Weinberger (bass) and Fabian Schramek (keyboards), who unfortunately had to leave the band due to a move, and since the beginning of this year they are back to a four piece with Viktoriia Hrytsutenko on vocals.
Just recently they were booked for the birthday party of the Rind in Rüsselsheim, a cool location with a very long tradition. And here again, the audience is immersed in the playing of the instruments, in the moments that happen. Viktoriia, active in music since the age of seven, strengthens the combo with her presence and of course her wonderful voice and brings the blues across so wonderfully; now the band is complete.
And they deliver what their band name promises.
The interview with the band will follow soon in the corresponding section.
