Band of the week 45/2024
Origin: Kaiserslautern, Germany
Genre: Modern Metal, Deathcore, Djent
The band about itself:
We are Designed to Fail, a Metalcore/Djent-Project from all over the World
Editorial commentary:
It wasn’t all that long ago that Designed To Fail came onto my radar. Back in 2022, I was able to see their lead guitarist Öykü perform live with her former band Psychera, which would break up shortly afterward. Not too long after that, she became part of this quartet.
This four-piece band, whose members are spread across much of Rhineland-Palatinate, is all about downtuned guitars, breakdowns, and various djent influences. But they also bring a solid dose of groove to the table, rounded off with catchy hooks.
„You’ve heard all this before!“ you might think. And yes, this isn’t a reinvention of modern metal. But does it need to be when it’s well-executed and, in the end, is just meant to be fun? I don’t think so!
That’s exactly why it’s worth checking out the releases this internationally mixed band has put out so far. International? Yes, that’s a fitting description since Anthony (guitarist and producer) and Charles (drummer) are Americans stationed in Germany, while Öykü is a Turkish guitarist currently living in Germany. Steven (vocals) from Trier completes the lineup.
With their latest single, Note To Self, Designed To Fail continue on their path, delivering an excellent mix of Meshuggah-esque riffs and that aforementioned groove. It all comes across as far less over-thought than other bands in this genre often do. The sound, by the way, is handled by the unofficial fifth band member, Matthew Young, who strikes the perfect balance between modern and natural tones in his mix—a balance that’s not always achieved these days.
If you’d like to experience the band’s live performance, you can do so on December 12th of this year, when they’ll join Frankfurt’s deathcore Veterans Sun Eater and Hessen-based Call It Tragedy for an end-of-year show at Nachtleben in Frankfurt.
