Editorial commentary:
Many great bands are only discovered by chance. We met the musicians of the Belgian atmospheric doom/black metal band Splendidula, founded in 2008, at Prophecy Fest 2024, when their singer Kristien Cools was on stage as a guest singer with the Australian group Germ around Tim Yatras. After listening to a few songs for the first time, it quickly became clear that this is no ordinary band, but one that is definitely capable of putting its own stamp on the music and its style. ‘Atmospheric’ is definitely the right adjective to describe this. The mixture of doom and stoner, but also some black metal elements, makes Splendidula a very interesting construct, considering the development from the first, self-titled release from 2013, through the first full album Post Mortem (2018) to the current album Somnus from 2021. Across these releases, the musicians manage to absorb the listener with a doomy atmosphere, supported by clean guitars and grandiose vocals, while faster and heavier songs come along very powerfully and transmit a lot of energy. All in all, it can be said that it never gets boring, on the contrary, it always remains innovative and varied.
Splendidula is one of the few bands that can be said to have at least one song for every listener. What makes the band and their style special is their originality and ability to mix their influences in a grandiose and successful way to create a unique, dark and emotional musical entity. Therefore, this band can only be warmly recommended to those who don’t normally feel at home in doom or atmospheric stoner/black metal. It’s worth it. Since the sudden death of their bassist Peter in 2022, the Belgians have been working on a new album, which is due to be recorded at the end of 2024. We can therefore look forward to more material from Splendidula, which, in our experience, certainly has great potential to be a good album.
