For over a decade, FIRTAN has been a relentless force in the German Extreme Metal Scene, captivating audiences with their dynamic performances across Europe. Inspired by the raw energy of 90s Black Metal bands, their sound has evolved into a unique, more progressive entity, shedding eclectic influences for a multifaceted and innovative approach musical shifts.
Editorial commentary:
Those who have been following us for a while will have noticed that we already featured Firtan as Band of the Week in 2019. However, a lot has changed since then, both in terms of personnel and music (even the logo has changed), which is why I would like to reintroduce them to you today:
In the beginning, Firtan were still rooted in pagan metal, but they have now completely abandoned that style. Nevertheless, they are not your typical black metal band. Through the skillful use of Klara on the violin, they emphasize the gentler or more intense, harsh moments depending on the mood of the song. Added to this are the cleverly placed quiet passages in the songs before the sound storm hits you again.
Firtan’s strengths are even more evident when they play live. The stage presence of each individual band member is strong in itself, but it is the interplay between them all that makes them one of the strongest bands in the genre for me.
With Ethos, they have created a work that lovers of atmospheric/melodic black metal should definitely be familiar with. And don’t forget to check out the wonderful videos that go with it!
Firtan will be going on tour in January, accompanying Ellende on their Zerfall album release tour. You shouldn’t miss it!
