Band of the week: Kolac

Band of the week 46/2025

Origin: Belgrade, Serbia
Genre: Black Metal

Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.

The band about itself:

“The only goal set up for the band is to play the music that the founders like to listen without any innovations. Just pure anti-religious Black Metal dedicated to the darkest Underground.”

Editorial commentary:

As one can see, for example, from the tour dates of various bands, the Balkans are often overlooked and forgotten when it comes to metal. Yet the region has a lot to offer musically. One of the best examples of classic black metal will be presented here today. Kolac, which simply means ‘stake’ in English, was founded almost 20 years ago in Serbia’s beautiful capital Belgrade.

After several demos and live performances, the band released their first album, Bastard Son Is Dead, in 2011. It quickly became apparent that, while the band wasn’t really reinventing black metal, their creative and driving riffs did justice to the style. While anti-christian and blasphemous lyrics remain the standard for the genre, the album impressed with some creative passages that made the overall work a richly varied debut. After various splits and smaller releases, the second album, Zauvek Crni (‘(They are) forever black’), was released three years later. Already here, a clear development was evident, especially in the sound. The songwriting was very much in line with their previous music, offering listeners the typical classic black metal that simply ‘hits you in the face’ and, above all, could and still can provide great inspiration, especially live. Kolac have now been signed to the Romanian label Pest Records for a year, where they released their latest, self-titled album in February 2024. This is certainly the reference work for many listeners of Serbian black metal and those who want to dive deeper into the local scene.

Although bassist Miloš Grob Šebalj, one of the founding members, recently left the band, co-founder, singer and guitarist Nemanja Zlorog Krneta has put together a very strong line-up that knows how to win over audiences with their music on stage. This should definitely be taken as an encouragement to go and see one of their gigs, should the geographical opportunity occur. Kolac will soon be playing at the second edition of Serbian Black Metal Assault in Novi Sad on 22nd November this year, where Šakal, whom we have already featured in a previous ‘Band of the Week’ article, will also be playing. Ultimately, it can be said once again that it is always worthwhile to look beyond the often-mentioned (geographical) horizon and discover what musical treasures are hidden in other countries. You may be surprised by what you find. In the case of Kolac, we can look forward to seeing what awaits us next.
