Editorial commentary:
There’s not really much information about In Mourning. No band bio, no own homepage, nothing. The only thing that can be found is the sentence mentioned above. And of course their music.
I had the pleasure of experiencing the band as support for Insomnium on their tour. To say it straight away, I was blown away.
When the guys entered the stage, the grins were already stuck on their faces and it was immediately clear to me that they were really up for it. So it was no surprise that they were dashing across the stage, jumping, singing along and making faces. But musically they were also completely convincing. Sophisticated riffs, very melodic, sometimes melancholic parts, but the whole thing composed in such a varied way, makes their music something special. Beautiful Melo-Death, with a hint of progressive and also doomy approaches. The sound went straight to my ears and immediately had me bobbing along and later headbanging. Sometimes you could lose yourself in the melodies with your eyes closed. The vocals should also be mentioned. Each of the protagonists, apart from their drummer, had at least one vocal part. Some parts were sung in three voices, clean and growled at the same time. It was really fun to listen to, because it didn’t seem chaotic or exaggerated. A real highlight.
I later found out that their regular drummer is Joakim Strandberg Nilsson, who also plays drums for Dark Tranquillity. And he was recording the new album with them, which is why he couldn’t play the tour. He was replaced very well by Corny, who is responsible for the drums in the doom band Ahab.
For me, In Mourning were the surprise of the evening and that’s why they are highly recommended. Definitely give them a listen! The guys have saved themselves a permanent place in my playlist!
