Band of the week: Vermaledeyt

Band of the week 08/2026

Origin: Memmingen, Germany
Genre: Mediaval Rock

Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.

The band about itself:

VERMALEDEYT is back! Ten years after their last concert, the medieval rock band from Memmingen has reunited in 2024.

VERMALEDEYT are known for their modern interpretation of traditional tunes and their own songs in a modern medieval style. In addition to typical instruments of this genre, such as bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy and harp, the cello also plays an important role in the band’s typical sound.

Editorial commentary:

Let’s take a trip back to 2012. Back then, I visited an MPS with my family. For those who don’t know, the MPS (full name: Mittelalterlich Phantasie Spectaculum, or Medieval Fantasy Spectacle) is a series of events, with the character of basically a very large, not necessarily authentic, medieval market and the breeding ground for so many medieval and medieval rock bands. But enough about that; back then, various bands played on three stages spread across the grounds, some of which are now well known, such as Feuerschwanz and Saltatio Mortis, but many more, including Vermaledeyt. Anyway, I happily strolled through the grounds, checked out bands, took my first steps in concert photography, and lingered at Vermaledeyt’s show. I was vaguely familiar with their music from an internet radio station, having heard two songs, and wanted to take the opportunity to see them live. I was really impressed.

Even back then, the music stood out to me because of the mix of standard instruments you’d find in a medieval (rock) band and the more rarely used cello. But, for me, Vivianne not only stood out with her cello, but also with her singing, as I usually have a hard time with female vocals, but somehow, it works for me with Vermaledeyt. That remained my only live experience with the band for a long time, and I believed it would stay that way when the band broke up in 2014. When I stumbled across the news in early 2025 that the band was back and playing live, I took it as an opportunity to check them out again. At Wacken and the Tanzt! Festival, I had my chance and was as thrilled as I was over a decade ago. The new material fits in perfectly with the music from 2012 and before, yet shows a certain development without losing its roots. That’s why there’s something old and something new to hear in the music suggestions. So, if you like medieval rock that’s not just faster and louder, but danceable and cheerful, you should listen to Vermaledeyt!
