Band of the week: VÆTTE

Band of the week 22/2026

Origin: Denmark
Genre: Blackened Folk Metal

Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.

The band about itself:

VÆTTE is a Danish dark folk metal band founded in 2022 by Michael Lundquist. Drawing inspiration from the Nordic folkmetal tradition, VÆTTE blends melodic metal with folk elements, weaving dark atmospheres with harsh vocals and Nordic melodies. The band’s music delves into the shadowy realms of Scandinavian folklore and legends, telling stories of forgotten creatures, ancient myths, and the sinister forces lurking in the depths of nature. With haunting melodies, powerful riffs, and an uncompromising sound, VÆTTE captures the essence of the untamed wild — where the line between man and myth begins to blur.

Editorial commentary:

I’m sure a lot of people are thinking right now: “Here we go again—another run-of-the-mill folk metal band…”

But I can definitely put your minds at ease here, because while the Danish band VÆTTE does follow that style, they’ve still managed to create something entirely their own. But let’s start from the beginning:

VÆTTE (Danish plural: vætter) is the scandinavian term for nature spirits, dwarves, and gnomes, and I stumbled upon them when they were announced for the Dark Troll Festival. Since that announcement, I’ve kept running into them. A friend recommended them to me; they were announced for a gig with a band I know, and their singer also screams into the mic for Vansind. But there hadn’t been a chance to see them live in Germany yet.

Then came the Dark Troll Festival, and the band played their first show outside of Denmark there… And it was a blast!

VÆTTE manage to strike exactly the right balance (for me) between folk and black metal. It’s enhanced by sophisticated keyboard melodies, which are also performed live by a musician, instead of being delivered by just using a backing track (major plus for me). The musicians were clearly having a blast with their performance, and that energy immediately rubbed off on the audience. Occasionally, slight Finntroll vibes came through, like at the beginning of Blandt Kryb Og Kravl, which I’ve linked below. Hair was flying, people were dancing, and even a small mosh pit formed. Not bad for the festival’s second band!

Lyrically, true to their name, they explore the world of mythology with all its wonderful creatures, wrapped in catchy melodies that make it really hard to stand still.

If you’re in the mood to blast some black folk metal, I highly recommend VÆTTE!
