Band of the week 23/2024
Origin: Norway
Genre: Black Metal, Post-Metal
Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.
The band about itself:
„Ambient, “wall-of-sound” landscapes, with a focus on melodic atmospheres, yet with a solid groove. The music and lyrics inspired by life as a being facing inner conflict and turmoil, haunted by numerous emotions that never will be laid to rest. Sylvaine is my outlet for all this and is a way of processing every aspect of this earthly life.“
Editorial commentary:
Behind the name Sylvaine is the one-woman project of musician and composer Kathrine Shepard. She is supported by Dorian Mansiaux on drums, but all the other elements, from vocals to guitar, bass and synthesizer, are composed and recorded by Kathrine Shepard. This alone is an impressive achievement for which the musician deserves a lot of respect. At this point I was reminded of other solo projects where a single musician can muster the creative power of a band, and I immediately thought of the projects of Myrkur or Vermilia. In these three projects, including Sylvaine, a single artist and her work are presented, resulting in special music.
Sylvaine’s project is characterized by an elegant balancing act between black metal, post-metal and an ethereal, soft touch. This encourages a play of contrasts which, much like Vermilia, leads to a harsh contrast within the albums and also within individual songs, but in contrast to the aforementioned project, Kathrine Shepard doesn’t just construct a hard-soft contrast in Sylvaine, but goes one step further. Elvish vocals alternate with vicious shrieks and insane screams. Blast beats and atmospherically adapted guitar riffs blast through the music and are interrupted, accompanied and expanded by the keyboard and choirs in the background. The occasional post-metal creeps in and leads the listener through a long resia with many mountains and valleys. Sylvaine thus becomes a special listening pleasure, which I would like to recommend to every lover of black metal.
Hopefully I was able to arouse your curiosity for another music project with this report.
