Band of the week: Precipitation

Band of the week 26/2025

Origin: Babenhausen, Germany
Genre: Progressive, Melodic Death Metal, Acoustik

Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.

The band about itself:

PRECIPITATION – a complicated word for some, but for the 4 guys from Babenhausen it means nothing less than giving free rein to their thoughts.
These are given free rein in the form of melodic metal with a tendency towards blues and a post-progressive edge. Seven years together, more than
170 concerts – including as support for bands such as Wintersun, Suidakra and Parasite Inc. – and a tour in Russia and Cuba later, the fun of making music is greater than ever.

A fresh mix of blues, acoustic rock and classical elements sheds a new light on the otherwise rather gloomy pieces. With their long hair tied back in pigtails and without electric amplification, they can not only be heard on their second album The Flower Of…, but can also be experienced live and in color.

Editorial commentary:

Today we present a band that we introduced to you 6 years ago in this category, as one of the first in Band of the Week. However, 6 years is a long time and of course so much has happened in the meantime that we would like to revisit it and take the Mahlstrom Open Air 2025 as an opportunity to do so.

At the Mahlstrom Open Air 2019, we were able to listen to Precipitation in a special setting, namely as an act on a hike. The band played in the middle of the adjacent forest, with minimal equipment, small amplifiers, acoustic guitars and a cajón instead of drums, the band played their music, progressive melodic death metal in a much quieter version. We weren’t the only ones who liked it. On their second album, The Flower of … the band also knows how to present their metal songs in exciting acoustic versions. This works excellently both on CD and live. But even in the metal version, the music manages a good balancing act between catchy and progressive.

During the pandemic, the band unfortunately announced that singer Alex was leaving the band. This was hard news for the fans, as his very distinctive voice was definitely a trademark of the band. But the band endeavoured to carry on and for some gigs got support from musician friends or simply played as a three-piece. In mid-2022, however, they finally found a suitable singer in Jan Rudolph, and in this constellation we were able to see them again twice at the Mahlstrom Open Air 2025.

On Thursday, they first played a metal set on stage, with songs from their new album Deep Down the Tide in their luggage. And, as in 2019, they were there with two gigs and played again on Saturday at the hike.

At both gigs, they proved that the formation also worked wonderfully with a new singer, with both new and old songs scoring with a new voice.

Precipitation are a very diverse band, fans of bluesy acoustic music as well as fans of progressive or melodic death metal are sure to get something out of the band, listen in!
