Band of the week 34/2024
Origin: Austria
Genre: Black Metal
Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.
The band about itself:
With the intention of creating supreme black metal art, this quintet ascended from the catacombs of Vienna, Austria in 2016 and consists of experienced individuals exclusively. The brand new 2022 album “Fragment : Totenruhe” will be their second strike under the banner of AOP records and a worthy successor to the 2020 album “Fragment : Erhabenheit”. Marking a total number of four releases since the founding days, Theotoxin stands for longevity, continuity and ongoing advancement.
Theotoxin is a guarantor for intense live performances and delivers an unprecedented show with deep yet aggressive atmosphere. With plenty of live appearances and a tour through Europe accomplished so far, the band is eager to spread their black chants even further.
Editorial commentary:
The first time I saw Theotoxin was at Fimbul Festival 2020, shortly before the release of their third album, Fragment: Erhabenheit. This was also the first release with their new singer Ragnar, who has been part of the band since 2019 and had previously been on the microphone with Bifröst, among others. Even back then, it was his stage presence in particular that made the performance memorable.
Without a lot of frills on stage, but with elaborate corpse paint and the instrumentalists behind black half masks, the quintet delivered an incredibly strong stage performance. The singer’s extremely strong gestures and facial expressions are particularly striking, but Flo Musil’s performance behind the drums also stands out due to his incredible speed and joy of playing. Musically, their aggressive and fast-paced black metal is definitely convincing. The live show begins classically with a piece from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, before the band completely tears it down with their uncompromising show.
I’ve been lucky enough to see the band at a number of festivals this year, and each time I’ve been completely blown away by the show.
