Band of the Week: Depressive Witches

Band of the week 40/2023

Origin: Picardy, Frankreich
Genre: Black Metal/Black ’n‘ Roll

Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.

The band about itself:

„Black Metal band Depressive Witches was formed in 2018 in Picardy, France by brothers Sick Bab on vocals and guitar, and Torvuus on guitars and drums. Linked by both blood and a passion for black and extreme metal, creating music together was only natural.“

Editorial commentary:

Over the last few months we already reported twice about Depressive Witches, once about their performance at Dark Troll 2023 (in German) and once as a review of their second album Distant Kingdoms (in German). Nevertheless I would like to dedicate a third article to this band, firstly for all the readers who missed the festival report and/or the review and secondly because they simply deserve it. From a purely musical point of view, the project of the two brothers is interesting, because at live performances just two musicians alone create a dense, gripping atmosphere and because the genre Black ’n‘ Roll is often overlooked in the large field of Black Metal. Black ’n‘ Roll is an exciting music that combines different styles and always surprises me when I listen to it. When I first came into contact with Depressive Witches I was perplexed and hardly understood what I was listening to. I would like to tell you about this first contact here, so that you can better understand the strength of this music.

Part of the journalistic work for a festival report is an initial examination of the bands. The festivals offer short texts about the bands, but hardly give an impression of the music. Therefore we listen to each band and try to get a feeling for the music. In the case of Dark Troll, I found a playlist with every band confirmed for 2023. In the coming days I ran this playlist up and down and slowly had a vague idea what to expect at the festival. When the playlist jumped to Depressive Witches, more precisely to the song Distant Kingdom, I wasn’t surprised at first. Sounded like solid black metal, but all of a sudden the music switched to its rockier pace and my ears were ringing with joy. At first I just assumed an unintentional change in the playlist or an unwanted song that slipped in between, but that was wrong. This was intentional by the band. This discovery didn’t let me go and so I walked around for days and had to show every person, really EVERY person this music. I felt like a child who discovered a hidden magic of this world. For this reason, I made it my mission to write a review about their first album and additionally mention them in our band of the week section. I recommend you to listen to the song below and make up your own mind about Depressive Witches.
