Band of the week 46/2024
Origin: Melbourne, Australia
Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.
The band about itself:
Melbourne quintet Future Static create an intoxicating synthesis of alternative, melodic and progressive to form a unique brand of emotional heavy music unlike any other. The group is led by their stunning vocal duo, a magical chemistry between bassist Kira Neil and electrifying Melbourne-born, Barcelona-raised frontwoman Amariah Cook.
Making Liminality as collaborative as possible, featuring the unique musical voices of all members in a cohesive yet diverse artistic statement. With the incessant layers of soaring lead guitars, crunchy riffs and dynamic cleans, overlaid with unique and layered vocal melodies that Future Static are known for, the record ebbs and flows through a combination of different genre inspirations and themes.
Editorial commentary:
We were able to see the band on tour in August as a support act in front of Ankor in Wiesbaden. I was a bit skeptical at first. Another female fronted metalcore band, was my first thought. My second thought was, well, aren’t they laying it on a bit thick?
Well, and then the band came on stage. And do you know what it’s like – love at first listen? The band starts, you get carried away and stand there thinking, where have you been so far? That’s how it was with Future Static. The musicians are audience-oriented, grateful and full of energy. I would like to say that the band only lives from its emotional and energetic frontwoman Amirah Cook. She warbles her hooks in clean vocals, only to sweep across the stage the next moment with sidekicks and growls and the moment after that to kneel on the stage floor with her face contorted in pain and sing her part in a clear, gentle voice.
But that’s not true, because we also have the bass player Kira Neil, which also is the second singer. Most of the time she sings backing vocals, but not only. There are songs like The Hourglass where she sings the first vocal and Amirah Cook the second in the chorus. The song is one of the best examples of the talent and another trademark of the band. It begins with thunderous drum fills before launching into a one-two punch of chugging, down-tuned guitars and bloodcurdling growls. Every member of the band worked on this song. It’s about the idea that sometimes you dig yourself a pit by your own actions, which is vocally echoed by Amirah Cook, and although I only learned this fact afterward, you can hear it. Kira Neil took over her written part of the chorus as if she was pouring out her soul and we as listeners were glued to her lips.
It was not only here that the bassist’s voice was accentuated and deliberately used as a counterpoint to Amirah Cook’s vocal range. The synergy of the two frontwomen speaks for itself and is certainly still a trademark of the band. But without the three musicians in the band, it wouldn’t work. The guitarists sweep, jump and leap across the stage or sit on the monitor speaker and pluck their solos as they do on The Hourglass.
Here too, the melodies complement the vocals perfectly and there are one or two progressive metal moments. Last but not least, we have the drummer. He hurls the blast beast around our ears at regular intervals. With so much energy on stage, it’s not surprising that the Kesselhaus is already boiling by the second song. I think that’s a great achievement for an unknown support act.
The only downer is that the band’s next live gigs are down under, but who knows, maybe they’ll get to tour with Jinjer, Electric Callboys, Tessaract in their home country / here, and we can enjoy them again. In the meantime, I can recommend their latest album Liminality, a multi-layered metal-core album.
