Band of the week: Morgarten (English Version)

Band of the week 26/2023

Origin: Swiss

Genre: Blackened Folk Metal

The band about themselves:

In search of battles and victories Morgarten has been touring Europe since 2005. The band from the French speaking part of Switzerland is named after the famous Battle of Morgarten in 1315, where the Swiss defeated the Austrian army. With their harsh yet melodic folk- and black metal Morgarten brings back the forgotten glory of the time of knights.

Editorial commentary:

Morgarten are also a band that I was able to experience live for the first time at the Mead & Greed Festival, another time at the Dark Troll Festival (both reviews are in German) and now at the Mittsommernächte Bärenstein. However, they had been on my radar for quite some time, as they played quite often at the same place where Vanaheim played. So I was already looking forward to their live performance.

The two stands on either side looked very promising, as they were held by a pitchfork and a rake. Great, simple elements in the stage decoration. The boys had also visually adapted to their concept. They entered the stage in simple peasant garb and monk’s robes. Musically, there was also a lot on offer here: Melodic folk metal, accompanied by keyboard sounds, meets partly really hard borrowings from black metal, which always animates to move and to swing your hair, which absolutely worked live. No matter if it was just headbanging or a mosh pit or circle pit, it was always going on. On top of that, the guys are always incredibly up for it, and you can see it in their faces!

On Dark Troll there was a new element of the show for me: singer Pierric told the story of the song The Last Breath as an introduction. An absolute goosebump moment in bright sunshine.

With their last and most recent work, Cry of the Lost, they have created a great and coherent album whose tracks work incredibly well on stage. So now I come to the end. As you can see, a clear recommendation from my side, because the guys are really fun live.

I would also like to recommend their little Morgarten Fest in Switzerland. It takes place on a lake, on a fucking boat. How cool is that?

Band of the week is our weekly posting about a band we recommend and is posted every Tuesday at 8pm. These are bands that are just at the beginning of their career that we think need more attention. Please note that most of the articles are in German.
