Band of the week: Rue Oberkampf

Band of the week 16/2026

Origin: Munich, Germany
Genre: Electro

Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.

The band about itself:

Rue Oberkampf is a genre-defying band that blends darkwave, electronic music, and a haunting aesthetic, captivating audiences worldwide. Their music is a journey into the depths of sound and emotion, drawing inspiration from the darker sides of life and art. With a loyal fanbase in the goth scene, they continue to push boundaries with each new release.

Editorial commentary:

I first came across Rue Oberkampf at E-Tropolis 2025, where they played on the main stage. I was instantly hooked. A pyramid of light stood in the center and pulsed and lit up during the intro to „Hope and Fear.“ The deep synthesizer rumbled, captivating me, before Julia’s voice kicked in. I was completely lost in the music. Of course, the stage was much too big for the two members of the group, Julia de Jouy and Oliver Maier, as well as their live keyboardist, Geistha. But that didn’t matter at all because the music really came into its own up there.

Together, de Jouy and Maier create an exciting blend of techno, EBM, and dark wave that defies easy categorization and any attempt to do so is practically blasphemous. This explains the vague classification as „electro“ in this article. They blend a wide range of influences into a unique sound, and it works brilliantly. Characterized by pulsating beats, dark synth pads, and Julia’s clear, often melancholic voice, their music creates an atmosphere that feels simultaneously cool and emotional. The music evokes nostalgia for the techno scene of yesteryear while always feeling contemporary and distinctive. This makes it a perfect fit for the large stage at the Turbinenhalle in Oberhausen, where E-Tropolis takes place, as well as for smaller clubs. Versatility and playfulness take center stage, but with a clear, polished structure. This allows listeners to let go, lose track of time, and simply dance along. Still, you should listen to each song at least once with full attention on a good sound system or with good headphones. Pay attention to all the little background details that give the songs their special something.

Rue Oberkampf blends genres to create contrasts, but also does so through language. The band sings in English, French, and German, sometimes switching between languages within the same song. This is very fitting for the band’s name, which refers to the street in Paris named after the Franco-German textile industrialist Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf. He is also the namesake of the debut album, Christophe-Philippe.

„We felt that the contrast between the harsh sound of the name and the colorful scene that calls Rue Oberkampf home today suited us and our music,“ the Franco-German de Jouy explained to her colleagues at Schwarzes Bayern a few years ago. It was an interesting idea that she and the other founding members, Maier and Damien De-Vir, who has since left the group, had back then. They have carried it forward across two albums, two EPs, and several singles.
