The band about itself:
Northumbrian Monastic doom from Mark Deeks of Winterfylleth
Editorial commentary:
I first saw – and actually heard – ARÐ live at the Prophecy Fest in 2024. I had expected something entirely different: Doom as we know it, heavy, crushing, predictable in its own way. Instead, the music felt immediately different — quieter, more solemn, almost liturgical, yet without any sense of exaggeration. This blend of atmospheric weight and an almost documentary clarity pulled me in right away. It was one of those rare moments when you realize a band isn’t trying to be something — it simply is.
ARÐ’s lyrics feel like remnants of a time long gone, yet still resonant. Mark Deeks doesn’t write about emotions; he writes about history — and that’s exactly why emotions arise. His words circle around Northumbria, around kings, saints, hermits, and places that now exist only as faint shadows in old chronicles. The lyrics are sparse, almost austere, yet full of meaning: small fragments of a world where faith, power, and landscape were inseparable. Instead of painting grand images, Deeks uncovers layers. He describes the solitude of a ruler, the silence of a monastery, the harshness of a land that shapes people without sparing them. This sobriety makes the lyrics so striking.
The vocals surprised me immediately as well — they sound more like calm, layered choral singing than the typical metal growls often found in Doom Metal. It gives the music a distinct character and sets ARÐ apart from many other projects.
