Band of the week: Vroudenspil

Band of the week 48/2025

Origin: Munich, Germany
Genre: Freibeuter Rock/Folk

Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.

The band about itself:

For more than ten years now, the Munich-based Vroudenspil have nurtured and cultivated their very own trademark: Freebooter Folk. A wild mixture of folk rock, ska, Balkan sounds, and influences from this world and beyond. Flutes, saxophone, rauschpfeifen and accordion are driven by pounding rhythms through breathtaking harmonies and melodies that leave no dancing feet still and no catchy tune idle. Leave your reason at the cloakroom and join the Dead Fools in a timelessly absurd dance within a kaleidoscope full of your wishes, dreams, and imagination from all times and worlds – in your very own personal panopticon.

Editorial commentary:

To me, Vroudenspil are one of those bands that leave a lasting impression – and it’s a positive one! Since 2007, the Munich freebooters have been sailing through the scene with their self-created genre Freebooter Folk and have achieved something that few can: they sound like a medieval fair, like Balkan ska, like a rock festival – and yet unmistakably like themselves.

What fascinates me most is this blend of bagpipes, accordion, flutes, and saxophone, merging with bass and drums into a sound that instantly sets you in motion. No wonder their concerts feel more like exuberant dance parties. Anyone who has been there knows: this is not just playing, this is celebrating – for example at the Tanzt! Festival in Munich, where they are the house band!

With their latest album Schattenuhr, they prove that even after more than a decade and a half, they are still brimming with energy and ideas.

Vroudenspil are not the typical newcomer or underground band we usually feature. However, there’s one thing they are for sure: highly underrated. The Munich freebooters have had a wild ride in recent years – lineup changes, support slots, headlining tours. And how many members are there, anyway? No idea, we lost track long ago. The band is a treasure chest full of surprises and fun – and that’s exactly what defines them.
