Band of the week: Pornophonique

Band of the week 23/2026

Origin: Darmstadt, Germany
Genre: Bitpop

Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.

The band about itself:

Two guys creating bitpop using a Gameboy on LSDJ, a guitar and some vocals. Their songs tell you about sad robots, the loneliness in computer dungeons and other heartbreaking scenarios like the downfall of mankind.

Editorial commentary:

Well, the band description only tells half the story, since it only applies to the part you can hear online. Live, it’s a whole different story, because that’s where they really let their sense of humor shine through. Sometimes it’s a bit dark, other times a bit nerdy… though you can probably guess the nerdy part just by reading about what kind of music they make and how they make it. I mean, hello? They make music with a Game Boy? Could it get any nerdier? I don’t think so. But they’re also not too proud to pull some silly antics on stage. You can really tell how much they enjoy making music. Live, you’ll also hear the occasional cover, like South of Heaven or Smoke on the Water, but also a song that reminds you of the classic game Lemmings. For those who don’t know it, here’s a quick summary: the goal of the game is to guide a group of anthropomorphic lemmings through a series of obstacles to an exit determined by the level. Of course, they always just run straight ahead until they hit an obstacle or fall into the abyss.

But back to Pornophonique. If you’re into handmade and, admittedly, somewhat unconventional music, I highly recommend catching one of these two guys’ concerts. Especially since they’re very down-to-earth people offstage as well.
