Editorial commentary:
Cwfen are a relatively new and musically exciting band from Scotland. I saw them live for the first time on 5th April 2026 at the Dark Easter Metal Meeting. This gig marked a special first: it was the band’s first performance in Germany at the Dark Easter Metal Meeting where they weren’t the support act. They had previously performed in Germany on 7th February 2026 as the support act for Paradise Lost, but in April, the musicians took centre stage.
I wasn’t familiar with the band at this point and was waiting in the club for their set with a completely open mind. I was already intrigued by their very first song, Bodies, and the following track, Wolfsbane, absolutely blew me away. The dense, heavy doom metal was heavily interwoven with elements of gothic and shoegaze, which lent the soundscape a certain playful lightness. The black metal elements sprinkled in here and there added an aggressive edge to the music, which really suited it. They were always just short sections, but it was precisely these that did music a world of good. They added a lot of variety the songs. Ever since that gig, I’ve been a huge fan of Cwfen’s music!
In terms of performance, Agnes Alder particularly impressed me. Although the musician had very little room to move on the small stage, she made extremely varied use of the limited space. Whilst singing, she moved with fluid gestures – sometimes slowly, sometimes at breakneck speed – thereby lending her performance a special dynamism. Mary Thomas Baker, the band’s bassist, was also a fascinating sight in his own right: Barefoot and with palpable passion, he played his instrument like a wild beast!
If you ever get the chance to see Cwfen live, do go along! If you’re a fan of diverse music that blends different genres to create a truly atmospheric work of art, and at the same time appreciate minimalist yet passionate performances, then this band is right up your street.
