Band of the week 34/2026
Origin: Neuss, Germany
Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal
Hier geht’s zur deutschen Version.
The band about itself:
„Schreigarm was born in the frosty February twilight of 2020 in the German city of Neuss. It is a project of two experienced Ukrainian musicians, Styrr and Ingvarr. The style of the band can be described as atmospheric pagan black metal combined with the melodiousness of post-black.“ -Quote from the band, source: www.schreigarm.com/about.html
Editorial commentary:
Shortly after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany, two Ukrainian musicians joined forces in Neuss, North Rhine-Westphalia, under the name Schreigarm to pursue their musical ambitions. Over the next five years, the musicians Ingvarr and Styrr would release two albums: The Mysteries of Fate (2023) and Mara Comes and Darkness Shall Reign (2025). If you haven’t seen the name Schreigarm on any festival line-up or concert poster during those five years, it’s not hardly surprising, as the band didn’t perform live for the first time until 2026.
On Sunday, 5 April 2026, the second day of the Dark Easter Metal Meeting in Munich, the two musicians performed live for the first time with their band. They were supported by the Ukrainian artist Alina Kuzmenko, also known as Lýna. After the performance, I had a very pleasant chat with her near the Ukrainian stand.
Musically, Schreigarm play dense, no-nonsense black metal, enriched with doom-laden passages and a heavy yet powerful melody. The alternating screams of Ingvarr and Styrr, along with the occasional clean vocals, create exciting contrasts to the otherwise very dense soundscape.
Ingvarr and Styrr appear in black stage outfits with hoods, decorated with bones and brown string. To complement their theatrical appearance, the musicians have come up with yet another surprise:
For the premiere, a dancer took the stage, moving across it with slow, flowing movements. She reappeared later to perform a choreographed routine with a voodoo doll, accompanied by cult-like chants in the background. I really like this idea, as it lightens the performance and adds some variety.
For fans of edgy, cold atmospheric black metal and highly theatrical, playful performances, I can highly recommend Schreigarm. I found their set at the Dark Easter Metal Meeting particularly gripping thanks to the unique performance, and I’m already looking forward to seeing the band again.
